The Bengaluru NavaNirmana Party (BNP) has filed two complaints before the Karnataka Lokayukta on Thursday alleging irregularities in the allocation and utilisation of the State government’s ₹2,000 crore road infrastructure package for Bengaluru.According to the complaints, funds earmarked for road development were allegedly diverted to works such as the construction of MLA offices, installation of name boards and multi-purpose buildings, which the party claimed were unrelated to road infrastructure. The complaints stem from the earlier analysis of the fund allocation by the party across the city’s 28 Assembly constituencies. BNP sought a comprehensive audit of the ₹2,000 crore package and has demanded that the alleged unequal distribution of funds be reviewed.“Large sums from the ₹2,000 crore package meant for road development have been channelled into projects that have nothing to do with road safety, while citizens continue to deal with potholes, waterlogging and deteriorating roads,” said Srikanth Narasimhan, founder and general secretary, BNP. The party has alleged that the ₹2,000 crore allocation across 28 Assembly constituencies was made without any publicly disclosed criteria, resulting in Congress-held constituencies receiving a disproportionately higher share of funds than those represented by Opposition parties. The party further argued that more than 30% of the ₹2,000-crore action plan, amounting to ₹662 crore, comprises projects with substantial non-road components. Of this, around ₹274 crore has allegedly been allocated to 60 standalone projects that are entirely unrelated to road infrastructure, the complaints stated. The last time the issue over the distribution of funds under the latest package arose, Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda had defended the arrangement of the funds, arguing that Congress-held constituencies were victimised during the previous BJP tenure and are now getting funds to bridge the deficit gap.
